What is a cubic yard? How much waste you really have

We price by volume, so here is how to size up a clear-out without a tape measure.

Our van service is priced by volume, in cubic yards. It sounds technical, but it is simple once you can picture one.

One cubic yard

A cubic yard is a cube three feet by three feet by three feet, or about 0.76 cubic metres. On our price list that is one fridge-freezer, a bit more than one washing machine, or 8 bin bags.

How we charge for it

The formula is £65 to attend plus £25 for every cubic yard, or a fixed price per item if that is cheaper, with a £69 minimum. You always pay the lower of the two. Because it is published, you can work out your own price before you ever contact us.

Sizing it up

These are the volumes we use on the price list for common items:

Add up your own items and you have your number. The easiest way is to click through the rooms in the waste calculator, which does the adding for you, or to send a photo if you would rather we worked it out. A full van is 12 cubic yards.

Packing tip

Bag and box loose items before we arrive. Less air in the load means fewer cubic yards on the invoice. Flat-packing furniture helps too.
